Doris Henson came together quickly and purposefully. In March 2002, Matthew Dunehoo wrote, recorded, and introduced an eight-song basement demo to bassist Byron Collum, a former member of Kansas City's Giants Chair, and drummer Wes Gartner, a complete stranger. Later additions included guitarist Jamie Zoeller and trombonist Mike Walker. These basement recordings indicate a desire to emulate and craft songs more closely akin to the art rockers of the late 60's and early 70's — songs that stand out as colorful narratives and exciting pieces of music.
